# What is NEC 210.8?

National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 210.8 has a variety of relevant subsets and captures a wide range of industries for its guidelines regarding electrical safety in each of these areas. We are going to take a closer look at each of these subsets, where they apply, and how NSS may be able to assist you in meeting these requirements.
NEC Article 210.8 (A): Subset A of NEC article 210.8 relates to all the areas in a dwelling (home) that require GFCI protection for 125-volt as well as 250-volt receptacles. This includes; kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoors, boathouses, and laundry areas. This code was put into place to protect homeowners from encountering electrical shock hazards in wet environments in their homes. The best form of protection is through installing a GFCI within 6ft of running water regarding appliances they can come into contact with within their dwelling.

# NEC Article 210.8(A)

Subset A of NEC Article 210.8 relates to all the areas in a dwelling (home) that require GFCI protection for 125-volt as well as 250-volt receptacles. This includes; kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoors, boathouses, and laundry areas. This code was put into place to protect homeowners from encountering electrical shock hazards in wet environments in their homes. The best form of protection is through installing a GFCI outlet within 6ft of running water for all appliances they can come into contact with inside a dwelling.

# NEC Article 210.8(B)

Subset B of NEC Article 210.8 relates to non-dwelling (x. workplaces) areas that require GFCI protection. It has a larger range of electrical protection involved, including 125-volt and 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits up to 50 Amps, and all receptacles supplied by three phase branch circuits supplying up to 100 Amps. There are numerous areas that require UL Listed GFCI protection (at or below the mentioned electrical configurations mentioned before), including; commercial kitchens, areas w/ sinks (involving food/beverage prep), buffet serving areas, bathrooms, sinks (where a receptacle or plug-in stationary appliance is located), rooftops, outdoors, indoor damp/wet locations, locker rooms, garages (accessory buildings, services bays & similar areas), aquariums (or similar open aquatic vessels/containers), and laundry areas. The updates to this Code (in 2020, with 2023 having similar language) have created a more demanding regiment of GFCI protection, especially in commercial kitchen environments with more language being added specifying where Class A protection is needed.

# NEC Article 210.8(D)

Subset D of NEC Article 210.8 relates to the specific appliances that require Class A GFCI protection on their respective supply outlets, up to 60 Amps, for single or 3-phase applications. This Article further reinforces NEC article 422.5(A), where it names 12 types of applications that require Class A protection to be an integral part of the appliances operation. These 12 applications include; vending machines, dishwashers, automotive vacuum machines, drinking watercoolers/bottle fill stations, pressure washers, tire inflation machines, electric ranges, sump pumps, wall-mounted ovens, microwave ovens, counter-mounted cooking units, and clothes dryers.

# NEC Article 210.8(F)

Subset F of NEC Article 210.8, which was a new addition to the 2020 code, relates to outdoor outlets of dwellings. This is where definitions start to get blurred, because outlets, according to NEC definition, are any point in a wiring system where the current is taken to supply equipment. So, this means that outdoor hardwired appliances (x. HVAC systems) require Class A GFCI protection. However, this Code has been amended during the 2020 code timeframe, specifically for HVAC equipment until 2026, because HVAC systems need to be updated to make sure that their systems can function properly with GFCI integration. In 2023 the language expanded to include garages, accessory buildings, and boathouses.

# What does this Code mean?

The main takeaway from this specific NEC Article is that you need Class A GFCI protection in most (if not all) areas of your home as well as in any workplace area that involves running water. It denotes the specific circuits that require protection as well as what appliances need that same protection. NEC Article 590 stipulates the electrical safety measures for temporary power. Learn more about the ground fault protection required at your construction site.

# What is NEC 590?

NEC Article 590 and all of its subsets are in relation to Temporary Installations. This means that it involves the electrical protection provisions for all temporary electrical power and lighting installations. Subset 590.6 (and more specifically 590.6(A)), dives into the mandated GFCI for temporary powered products. This subset, and all of its extensions, include:

# NEC Article 590.6:

This section is the specific destination for Ground-Fault Protection for the personnel working with all temporary wiring installations in a plethora of different working environments (from demolition, construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance, etc.). The Article also states that it needs to comply with requirements set in 590.6(A) & (B).

# NEC Article 590.6(A)

This section states (specifically for receptacle outlets) for the temporary use power to equipment in the stated locations (from section 590.6) need to comply with the requirements of 590.6(A)(1) through 590.6(A)(3). These sections state, in order:

1.) This part is for the receptacle outlets that are not part of the permanent venue wiring. This including 125VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp configured receptacles that are not a part of the fixed wiring of the building /structure, and which are in use by personnel must encompass ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection. On top of this, any required GFCI protection for personnel, listed cord sets/devices incorporating Listed GFCI protection must be of the portable construction type.

2.) This section is for the existing receptacles that are a part of the permanent infrastructure. They will require GFCI protection for personnel for all 125VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp receptacle outlets. Just as the previous section, this is accomplished with the use of “portable type” listed cord sets/devices.

3.) The last extension of subset 590.6(A) is concerning receptacles integral to a 15kW or smaller portable generator. Panel integrated 125VAC and 125/250VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp receptacle outlets shall provide listed ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection for personnel. This section also goes on to dictate that “if used in a wet/damp location, follow the guidelines from Article 406(A) & (B) (which dictates that they be weather resistant listed, and incorporate hinged doors for increased ingress protection).

# NEC Article 590.6(B)

This section gives fairly the same information, except it is the rules & regulations for “other” (as in other than the mentioned locations from 590.6(A)) receptacle outlets.

# What does this Code mean?

All and all, NEC 590 dictates the standards for electrical protection of temporary power supply operations, which also tie in similarly with OSHA standards in this instance. The section also makes sure to list when and where you need ground fault protection on a job site, which in most cases is everything under 125VAC and 30 Amps needs to have Class A (6mA) GFCI protection.

NEC Article 680 mandates electrical protection guidelines of aquatic structures. Learn more about ground fault protection for pools, spas, fountains, and more.

# What is NEC 680?

NEC Article 680 and all of its subsets involve swimming pools, fountains, and similar installations. In particular, that means that this Article deals with the electrical protection of all equipment involved in swimming, wading, therapeutic, & decorative pools, fountains, hot tubs, spas, and hydromassage bathtubs. As in many other NEC Articles, there is mention of GFCI protection, but in NEC 680 there are many parts that involve specifications/needs of GFCI protection in this section (8 to be exact). Here are all 8 subsections, starting with:

# NEC Article 680.5

This section dictates the overarching reach of Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) and Special Purpose Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (SPGFCI) protection. There are 3 parts to this subset, and they are as follows:

A.) This part, which is stated as “general”, just dictates that all GFCI and SPGFCI requirements in this Article must follow 210.8 (Class A protection) unless otherwise directed in the next 2 parts.
B.) This section is specified for the equipment that is not more than 150V to ground. In more detail, that is branch circuits not exceeding 150VAC to ground, 60A, and are single or three phase, need Class A GFCI protection.
C.) This part deals with equipment in excess of 150V to ground. In more detail, it’s for receptacles & outlet junctions on branch circuits operating at voltages greater than 150V to ground, although not exceeding a 480V maximum system voltage, shall be equipped with SPGFCI protection with a maximum trip setting of 20mA.

# NEC Article 680.21

This subset of Article 680 deals with motors involved in pools. There are 2 parts in this subsection that have relation to GFCI & SPGFCI protection which includes:

C.) This article is for the ground fault protection of outlet junctions for pool motors. It states that pool pump motors need to have GFCI protection that comply with either 680.5(B) or (C) (based on voltage specifications).
D.) This part handles pool pump motor replacement or repair. If a motor is replaced/repaired, the installation must be provided with the proper GFCI or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or (C).

# NEC Article 680.22

This subsection deals with the lighting, receptacles, and equipment for permanently installed pools. further down in this section, part 680.22(B)(4), its states that there needs to be GFCI or SPGFCI protection in accordance with 680.5(B) or (C) for all “luminaries, lighting outlets, and ceiling-suspended (paddle fans)” that are between 5-10ft (1.5-3m) from the inside of a pools walls.

# NEC Article 680.32

This section was made to give specifications for GFCI and SPGFCI protection guidelines for all of the electrical equipment (x. power-supply cords), used with storable pools/hot tubs/spas. Where they shall have the protection in accordance with either 680.5(B) or (C) depending on voltage specification of the equipment. It states that any receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 20ft (6m) of the containment walls of the specific storable pool/hot tub/spa also needs the specified protection above.

# NEC Article 680.43

This subsection states the specifications for the indoor installations of hot tubs & spas. The ground fault protection part of this subsection, 680.43(A)(2), states that any receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 10ft (3m) of the containment wall of the hot tub/spa requires GFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C), depending on the electrical specifications of the hot tub/spa.

# NEC Article 680.44

This section continues with giving GFCI and SPGFCI protection guidelines for hot tubs & spas. There are 3 sections which include:

A.) This is the “general” section, stating that unless otherwise stated in the next two parts, the spa/hot tub needs to follow section 680.5(B) or (C) for required GFCI or SPGFCI protection according to power specifications if the appliance.
B.) Any of the Listed subcomponents (lights, blowers , pumps, heaters, sanitizers , etc.) involved with a spa/hot tub that is a Listed product (encompassing an integral GFCI in its construction) does not need additional ground fault protection.
C.) this part of subset 680.44 has the guidelines for gas-fired water heaters. It says that any circuit serving a gas-fired hot tub/spa heater operating above the intrinsic safety voltage limit, requires ground fault protection.

# NEC Article 680.58

This subsection dictates the GFCI and SPGFCI protection for fountains. It states that all receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 20ft (6m) of a fountain basin shall have GFCI protection correlating with 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C).

# NEC Article 680.59

This subsection dictates the GFCI and SPGFCI protection for non-submersible pump motors. It states that the junction outlets that supply all permanently installed non-submersible pump motors are required to have GFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C) when applicable.

# What does this Code mean?

There are a lot of different parts to NEC 680 regarding to GFCI and SPGFCI protection, but the bottom line is you are either following code 210.8 for Class A (6mA) GFCI protection, and if there is any question or additional information added follow 680.5(B) for GFCI protection and 680.5(C) for Class C (20mA) SPGFCI protection.
