NEC 590 mandates electrical safety for temporary power installations, like construction sites. Find the new location of its GFCI requirements in the NEC.

# What is NEC 590?

NEC Article 590, as well as its subsets, handle the electrical safety of “Temporary Installations”. In the Code book, Temporary Installations include: temporary electrical power & lighting installations. These are typically seen in construction sites (temporary lighting for theaters & movie sets are addressed in NEC 520 and NEC 540, respectively). Subset 590.7 (which is a new location, previously NEC 590.6) defines the required GFCI protection for all temporary powered set-ups, whether they are supplied by existing wiring, temporary wiring, or portable generators. But what does 590.7 say it covers?

# What is NEC 590.7?

National Electrical Code 590.7 clarifies the Ground Fault protection guidelines for temporary power used for equipment in construction, remodeling, maintenance, repair, and demolition. It has two lettered parts; 590.7(A) gives requirements for GFCI protection from power supplied by receptacles, and 590.7(B), which is temporary power derived from something outside the scope stated in 590.7(A).

# What is NEC 590.7(A)?

Part A of NEC 590.7 gives the requirements for receptacle outlets, to be more specific, 3 different kinds; Outlets not a part of the permanent wiring, outlets that are a part of the existing (or just installed) wiring, & receptacles from portable generators. Their standards are numbered and as follows:

1.) Part 1 is for receptacle outlets not a part of any permanent wiring installation. These temporary systems, when 125V to ground, single phase, 15-30 amps, require Class A (5mA +/-1) GFCI protection.

2.) Part 2 is for receptacle outlets that were either part of an existing, or newly installed permanent wiring installation. These permanent systems when 125V to ground, single phase, 15-30 amps, require Class A (5mA +/-1) GFCI protection.

Also note, these two numbered sections have an exception, stating that if a GFCI device is listed for portable use in either of the named temporary power-up environments, it will be permissible in lieu of a GFCI protected outlet.

3.) Part 3 is for receptacles from portable generators that have a capacity up to 15-kW. It has 2 lettered parts, a & b which are:

590.7(A)(3)(a): All 125V & 125/250V to ground, single phase, 15-30 amps outlets (individually on a generator, not the generator as a whole), require Class A (5mA +/-1) GFCI protection.

590.7(A)(3)(b): mentions that if the generator is being used in “Damp or Wet Locations”, the receptacles on the generator need to comply with NEC 406.9(A) & (B). That NEC section dictates weather resistance in enclosures (x. IP ratings, hoods, covers, etc.).

The portable generators have a similar exception as the previous 2 parts, where listed for portable use GFCI equipment is allowed to meet the standard, except only for generators manufactured (or remanufactured) before January 1st of 2015. Generators made after those dates need listed GFCI receptacles integrated in their systems.

# What is NEC 590.7(B)?

Part B of NEC 590.7 states to follow the same standards outlined from the previous section, which again means all 125V & 125/250V to ground, single phase, 15-30 amps outlets require Class A (5mA +/-1) GFCI protection. There is an exception for equipment not conducive to GFCI protection, and it needs to be manually tested, tracked, & reported to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to ensure optimal personnel safety, as dangerous electrical leakage can be involved during operation in temporarily powered environments.

# What does this Code mean?

The 2026 version of NEC 590 kept things fairly similar to the previous iterations regarding temporary power and Ground fault protection. It still requires Class A Ground Fault protection for 15-30 Amp receptacles in most temporarily powered jobs. They did rearrange where information showed up in the Code, such as the GFCI protection section for temporary power in the 2026 NEC being 590.7, while the 2023 version of the NEC is 590.6. They also rearranged some of the structure, like portable use GFCIs being an Exception for certain systems, originally it was written individually in each numbered subsection of the Code.

# NEC Code Adoption by State as of 10/1/25

NEC (National Electrical Code) is fickle in the fact that although it comes out with a new Code every 3 years (most recent year was the NEC Handbook 2023 edition) it takes time for each state to officially adopt a given Code year. Some states work to stay current rather quickly (such as Massachusetts which updated to 2023 Code in February of the same year) while some states lag behind (Kansas has followed 2008 Code since 2008) and others leave it up to their counties or cities to decide what they follow (such as Arizona). There are also some odd stipulations, such as the state of New York following 2017 Code, but New York City follows 2008 Code. Here is a map of each state and which NEC Code year they follow as of 7/1/25.

# NEC Code Update by State as of 10/1/25

Another thing to keep in mind with NEC Code adoption is that it is an ongoing process. Not all states adopt new Codes right away (such as New Mexico having no plans to update their 2020 NEC currently), and some states can jump certain years altogether (Indiana is currently in the process of updating to 2023 Code from 2008 Code). # Conclusion

The 2026 National Electrical Code installment has some new updates for Ground Fault Protection requirements. Read this article to learn what they are.

# What is NEC 210?

National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 210 covers the electrical safety requirements for all branch circuits. It covers disconnecting means, overcurrent & undercurrent protection means, receptacle guidelines, and more. The most encompassing Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) guidelines in the entire Code book are detailed in one of its subsections, NEC 210.8.

# What is NEC 210.8?

National Electrical Code (NEC) subsection 210.8 outlines the required GFCI protection (which are Class A, and have a 5mA +/-1 trip level) separated by locations; such as in homes , workplaces, crawl spaces, and outdoors, as well as specific appliances & equipment that requires maintenance. Below is an overview of its 6 parts (A through F) and prevalent informational notes. One of the newest, and most impactful, notes is where we will start, which introduces HF Ratings.

# What is the HF note?

As the NEC now requires Ground Fault protection for a larger scope of applications & higher rated circuits in the recent Code cycles, high frequency during start up & cool down phases of equipment involving power inverters & variable frequency drives (VFDs) has created issues with inadvertent fault conditions. This is because the High Frequency “chatter” in the circuit is seen as electrical leakage by the GFCI. High Frequency (HF) rated Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters have been created to address this issue, following an inverse time curve (depicted in the chart above) that de-rates the value of leakage current corresponding to the frequency within in the circuit, which will allow safe operation while avoiding nuisance tripping.

This HF measure was codified to Underwriters Laboratory (UL) 943 (the UL standard for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) in August of 2025, in preparation for the 2026 NEC Code cycle. Also note, HF-rated GFCIs are meant to work in conjunction with equipment that is Listed to UL 101 standards (the UL standard for appliances) to ensure optimal operating conditions. The leakage limit for equipment that meets UL 101 can be seen as the bottom orange line in the above graph. Additionally, NSS created the chart below for you to be able to view the difference between what equipment can leak up to per UL 101, and where an HF rated GFCI will trip at certain frequency thresholds. Note, the GFCI threshold shown is the lowest possible trip point (x. At 60 Hz it will trip between 4.01mA to 6mA, hence the 5mA +/-1).

# What is NEC 210.8(A)?

Subsection A of NEC Article 210.8 outlines the GFCI requirements for homes (or as referred to in the Code as “dwelling spaces”). It mandates Class A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter protection for all 125V to 250V receptacles supplied from branch circuits under 150V to ground per hot leg in 14 specified locations, which are:

1.) Bathrooms

2.) Garages

3.) Non-livable accessory buildings (x. Storage rooms & workshops)

4.) Outdoors

5.) Crawl Spaces

6.) Basements

7.) Kitchens

8.) Areas with sinks intended for food, beverage, or cooking preparation

9.) Sinks (with outlets within 6ft)

10.) Boathouses

11.) Bathtubs & Shower Stalls (with outlets within 6ft)

12.) Laundry Areas

13.) Indoor Damp Locations

14.) Indoor Wet Locations

# What is NEC 210.8(B)?

Subsection B of NEC Article 210.8 lists the GFCI requirements for workplaces (or as it is written in the Code as “other than dwelling units”). It mandates Class A protection for all 125V to 250V receptacles supplied from single phase circuits rated up to 50 amps, and three phase circuits rated up to 100 amps (and note these circuits are at or under 150V to ground per hot leg) in 16 separate locations, which are:

1.) Bathrooms

2.) Kitchens

3.) Areas with sinks intended for food, beverage, or cooking preparation

4.) Buffet areas with permanent installations intended for serving food & beverages, or cooking

5.) Rooftops

6.) Outdoors

7.) Sinks (with outlets within 6ft)

8.) Indoor damp locations

9.) Indoor wet locations

10.) Locker rooms that include showers

11.) Garages, accessory buildings, service bays, or similar structures (excluding exhibition halls and showrooms, which are covered in their own section of the Code)

12.) Crawl spaces (both above and below grade level)

13.) Unfinished basements

14.) Open aquatic containers such as aquariums or baitwells (with outlets within 6ft)

15.) Laundry areas

16.) Bathtubs & shower stalls (with outlets within 6ft)

# What is NEC 210.8(C)?

Subsection C of NEC Article 210.8 states the GFCI requirements for crawl spaces, and more specifically the lighting outlets. It states that Class A GFCI protection is needed for all 120V outlets installed in crawl spaces for these applications.

# What is NEC 210.8(D)?

Subsection D of NEC Article 210.8 lays out the GFCI requirements for a specific set of appliances, and is very similar to NEC 422.5(A), the standard for GFCI integration on equipment. The difference between NEC 422.5(A) & NEC 210.8(D) is that subsection 210.8(D) lists the Ground Fault protection requirements for receptacles supplying the named (in the list below) appliances. It states that Class A GFCI protection is needed for circuits up to 60 Amp (single or 3-phase), under 150V to ground per hot leg for 12 named appliances, which are:

1.) Automotive vacuum machines

2.) Water coolers/bottle fill stations

3.) Pressure washing machines

4.) Tire inflation machines

5.) Vending machines

6.) Sump pumps

7.) Dishwashers

8.) Electric ranges

9.) Wall mounted ovens

10.) Counter mounted cooking appliances

11.) Clothes dryers

12.) Microwave ovens

# What is NEC 210.8(E)?

Subsection E states that Class A GFCI protection needs to be integrated into the receptacles for the equipment that “requires service”, and denotes that equipment is specified in NEC 210.63 (which covers HVAC, refrigeration, and other equipment that needs scheduled maintenance).

# What is NEC 210.8(F)?

Subsection F of National Electrical Code 210.8 lists the guidelines for GFCI protection of outdoor outlets. It mandates Class A GFCI protection for all single phase circuits, up to 60 Amps, up to 150V to ground per hot leg for 3 named locations, which are:

1.) Garages with floors at or below grade level

2.) Accessory buildings

3.) Boathouses

There are also 2 important exceptions/notes that involve NEC 210.8(F), especially for the 2026 NEC Code cycle.

The first, listed as “Exception 2”, is that GFCI protection is not required for (Agency) Listed HVAC equipment, but that exception expires on September 1st of 2026.

The second, listed as “Exceptions 3”, states that after September 1st of 2026, (Agency) Listed HVAC equipment can be protected by Class C SPGFCI protection (Class C GFCI equipment has a 18 +/- 2 mA trip level).

# What does this Code mean?

The 2026 NEC Code cycle added some key changes to Ground Fault protection standards for a wide scope of applications and appliances. It still requires Class A (5mA +/- 1 trip level) GFCI protection for a majority of its scope, while mentioning that Class C (18mA +/- 2 trip level) SPGFCI protection can be used for HVAC applications, as long as the HVAC unit & the SPGFCI are Agency Listed. It also addressed concern for larger circuits that have encountered nuisance tripping from high frequency introduced from certain equipment, such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), now allowing Listed HF-rated GFCIs to accommodate the demands of those applications.

National Electrical Code Article 422 handles specific appliance’s electrical needs. Learn more about what specific appliances require ground fault protection.

# What is NEC 422.5?

NEC Article 422.5 (the ground fault subsection of NEC 422) goes hand in hand with Article 210.8, as in where NEC 210.8 specifies GFCI protection requirements to the receptacles & outlets applied, NEC 422.5 specifies GFCI protection requirements for specific appliances, both plug-in or hardwired, as well as necessary locations requiring Class A GFCI protection. Updates in the language (that began in NEC 2020) also added that the protection on these appliances must be Class A (5+/- 1 mA trip level) protected. There are two subsections of NEC 422.5, Section A and B, and they include:

# NEC 422.5 (A)

Section A states there is 7 appliances that require Class A (between 4mA to 6mA ground fault threshold for electrical appliances rated up to 150 volts to ground & up to 60 Amps, single and/or 3-phase) GFCI protection according to this specific NEC classification. The appliances are as follows:

1.) Automotive vacuum machines

2.) Drinking water coolers & bottle fill stations

3.) Plug-in and hardwired high-pressure spray washing machines

4.) Tire inflation machines

5.) Vending machines

6.) Sump pumps

7.) Dishwashers

While there are more products that are required to have Class A protection (whether it be in terms of location or wiring configuration, always spelled out by the NEC in each specific Code Article) these are the 7 categories of standalone appliances that require Class A GFCI protection, per NEC guidelines.

# NEC 422.5 (B)

Section B dictates where and in what situations UL Listed Class A GFCI protection is required. There are 5 such locations according to this NEC classification, which are:

1.) Within a branch-circuit overcurrent device

2.) A device or outlet within the supply circuit

3.) An integral part of an attachment plug

4.) Within a supply cord that is no more than 12in (300mm) from the attachment plug

5.) Factory installed within the appliance.

These locations, again, work in conjunction with numerous other Codes. If your electrical appliance doesn’t meet any of these location requirements, you still need to make sure the appliance in its own right requires or doesn’t require Class A GFCI protection (x. kitchen equipment other than a dishwasher have their ground fault protection needs spelled out in NEC 210.8 (B)).

# What does this Code mean?

NEC 422.5 dictates what specific appliances and in what specific locations require UL Listed Class A GFCI protection. If it is outside the “scope” of a specific industry, NEC 422 is a good barometer to find out what named applications actually need GFCI protection and where it should be outfitted to meet NEC guidelines.

# What is NEC 210.8?

National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 210.8 has a variety of relevant subsets and captures a wide range of industries for its guidelines regarding electrical safety in each of these areas. We are going to take a closer look at each of these subsets, where they apply, and how NSS may be able to assist you in meeting these requirements.
NEC Article 210.8 (A): Subset A of NEC article 210.8 relates to all the areas in a dwelling (home) that require GFCI protection for 125-volt as well as 250-volt receptacles. This includes; kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoors, boathouses, and laundry areas. This code was put into place to protect homeowners from encountering electrical shock hazards in wet environments in their homes. The best form of protection is through installing a GFCI within 6ft of running water regarding appliances they can come into contact with within their dwelling.

# NEC Article 210.8(A)

Subset A of NEC Article 210.8 relates to all the areas in a dwelling (home) that require GFCI protection for 125-volt as well as 250-volt receptacles. This includes; kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoors, boathouses, and laundry areas. This code was put into place to protect homeowners from encountering electrical shock hazards in wet environments in their homes. The best form of protection is through installing a GFCI outlet within 6ft of running water for all appliances they can come into contact with inside a dwelling.

# NEC Article 210.8(B)

Subset B of NEC Article 210.8 relates to non-dwelling (x. workplaces) areas that require GFCI protection. It has a larger range of electrical protection involved, including 125-volt and 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits up to 50 Amps, and all receptacles supplied by three phase branch circuits supplying up to 100 Amps. There are numerous areas that require UL Listed GFCI protection (at or below the mentioned electrical configurations mentioned before), including; commercial kitchens, areas w/ sinks (involving food/beverage prep), buffet serving areas, bathrooms, sinks (where a receptacle or plug-in stationary appliance is located), rooftops, outdoors, indoor damp/wet locations, locker rooms, garages (accessory buildings, services bays & similar areas), aquariums (or similar open aquatic vessels/containers), and laundry areas. The updates to this Code (in 2020, with 2023 having similar language) have created a more demanding regiment of GFCI protection, especially in commercial kitchen environments with more language being added specifying where Class A protection is needed.

# NEC Article 210.8(D)

Subset D of NEC Article 210.8 relates to the specific appliances that require Class A GFCI protection on their respective supply outlets, up to 60 Amps, for single or 3-phase applications. This Article further reinforces NEC article 422.5(A), where it names 12 types of applications that require Class A protection to be an integral part of the appliances operation. These 12 applications include; vending machines, dishwashers, automotive vacuum machines, drinking watercoolers/bottle fill stations, pressure washers, tire inflation machines, electric ranges, sump pumps, wall-mounted ovens, microwave ovens, counter-mounted cooking units, and clothes dryers.

# NEC Article 210.8(F)

Subset F of NEC Article 210.8, which was a new addition to the 2020 code, relates to outdoor outlets of dwellings. This is where definitions start to get blurred, because outlets, according to NEC definition, are any point in a wiring system where the current is taken to supply equipment. So, this means that outdoor hardwired appliances (x. HVAC systems) require Class A GFCI protection. However, this Code has been amended during the 2020 code timeframe, specifically for HVAC equipment until 2026, because HVAC systems need to be updated to make sure that their systems can function properly with GFCI integration. In 2023 the language expanded to include garages, accessory buildings, and boathouses.

# What does this Code mean?

The main takeaway from this specific NEC Article is that you need Class A GFCI protection in most (if not all) areas of your home as well as in any workplace area that involves running water. It denotes the specific circuits that require protection as well as what appliances need that same protection. 2023 Code Year: NEC 210.8

NEC Article 680 mandates electrical protection guidelines of aquatic structures. Learn more about ground fault protection for pools, spas, fountains, and more.

# What is NEC 680?

NEC Article 680 and all of its subsets involve swimming pools, fountains, and similar installations. In particular, that means that this Article deals with the electrical protection of all equipment involved in swimming, wading, therapeutic, & decorative pools, fountains, hot tubs, spas, and hydromassage bathtubs. As in many other NEC Articles, there is mention of GFCI protection, but in NEC 680 there are many parts that involve specifications/needs of GFCI protection in this section (8 to be exact). Here are all 8 subsections, starting with:

# NEC Article 680.5

This section dictates the overarching reach of Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) and Special Purpose Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (SPGFCI) protection. There are 3 parts to this subset, and they are as follows:

A.) This part, which is stated as “general”, just dictates that all GFCI and SPGFCI requirements in this Article must follow 210.8 (Class A protection) unless otherwise directed in the next 2 parts.
B.) This section is specified for the equipment that is not more than 150V to ground. In more detail, that is branch circuits not exceeding 150VAC to ground, 60A, and are single or three phase, need Class A GFCI protection.
C.) This part deals with equipment in excess of 150V to ground. In more detail, it’s for receptacles & outlet junctions on branch circuits operating at voltages greater than 150V to ground, although not exceeding a 480V maximum system voltage, shall be equipped with SPGFCI protection with a maximum trip setting of 20mA.

# NEC Article 680.21

This subset of Article 680 deals with motors involved in pools. There are 2 parts in this subsection that have relation to GFCI & SPGFCI protection which includes:

C.) This article is for the ground fault protection of outlet junctions for pool motors. It states that pool pump motors need to have GFCI protection that comply with either 680.5(B) or (C) (based on voltage specifications).
D.) This part handles pool pump motor replacement or repair. If a motor is replaced/repaired, the installation must be provided with the proper GFCI or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or (C).

# NEC Article 680.22

This subsection deals with the lighting, receptacles, and equipment for permanently installed pools. further down in this section, part 680.22(B)(4), its states that there needs to be GFCI or SPGFCI protection in accordance with 680.5(B) or (C) for all “luminaries, lighting outlets, and ceiling-suspended (paddle fans)” that are between 5-10ft (1.5-3m) from the inside of a pools walls.

# NEC Article 680.32

This section was made to give specifications for GFCI and SPGFCI protection guidelines for all of the electrical equipment (x. power-supply cords), used with storable pools/hot tubs/spas. Where they shall have the protection in accordance with either 680.5(B) or (C) depending on voltage specification of the equipment. It states that any receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 20ft (6m) of the containment walls of the specific storable pool/hot tub/spa also needs the specified protection above.

# NEC Article 680.43

This subsection states the specifications for the indoor installations of hot tubs & spas. The ground fault protection part of this subsection, 680.43(A)(2), states that any receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 10ft (3m) of the containment wall of the hot tub/spa requires GFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C), depending on the electrical specifications of the hot tub/spa.

# NEC Article 680.44

This section continues with giving GFCI and SPGFCI protection guidelines for hot tubs & spas. There are 3 sections which include:

A.) This is the “general” section, stating that unless otherwise stated in the next two parts, the spa/hot tub needs to follow section 680.5(B) or (C) for required GFCI or SPGFCI protection according to power specifications if the appliance.
B.) Any of the Listed subcomponents (lights, blowers , pumps, heaters, sanitizers , etc.) involved with a spa/hot tub that is a Listed product (encompassing an integral GFCI in its construction) does not need additional ground fault protection.
C.) this part of subset 680.44 has the guidelines for gas-fired water heaters. It says that any circuit serving a gas-fired hot tub/spa heater operating above the intrinsic safety voltage limit, requires ground fault protection.

# NEC Article 680.58

This subsection dictates the GFCI and SPGFCI protection for fountains. It states that all receptacles of 125V through 250V, up to 60 Amps, situated within 20ft (6m) of a fountain basin shall have GFCI protection correlating with 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C).

# NEC Article 680.59

This subsection dictates the GFCI and SPGFCI protection for non-submersible pump motors. It states that the junction outlets that supply all permanently installed non-submersible pump motors are required to have GFCI protection according to 680.5(B) or SPGFCI protection according to 680.5(C) when applicable.

# What does this Code mean?

# What is NEC 590?

NEC Article 590 and all of its subsets are in relation to Temporary Installations. This means that it involves the electrical protection provisions for all temporary electrical power and lighting installations. Subset 590.6 (and more specifically 590.6(A)), dives into the mandated GFCI for temporary powered products. This subset, and all of its extensions, include:

# NEC Article 590.6:

This section is the specific destination for Ground-Fault Protection for the personnel working with all temporary wiring installations in a plethora of different working environments (from demolition, construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance, etc.). The Article also states that it needs to comply with requirements set in 590.6(A) & (B).

# NEC Article 590.6(A)

This section states (specifically for receptacle outlets) for the temporary use power to equipment in the stated locations (from section 590.6) need to comply with the requirements of 590.6(A)(1) through 590.6(A)(3). These sections state, in order:

1.) This part is for the receptacle outlets that are not part of the permanent venue wiring. This including 125VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp configured receptacles that are not a part of the fixed wiring of the building /structure, and which are in use by personnel must encompass ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection. On top of this, any required GFCI protection for personnel, listed cord sets/devices incorporating Listed GFCI protection must be of the portable construction type.

2.) This section is for the existing receptacles that are a part of the permanent infrastructure. They will require GFCI protection for personnel for all 125VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp receptacle outlets. Just as the previous section, this is accomplished with the use of “portable type” listed cord sets/devices.

3.) The last extension of subset 590.6(A) is concerning receptacles integral to a 15kW or smaller portable generator. Panel integrated 125VAC and 125/250VAC, single-phase, up to 30-Amp receptacle outlets shall provide listed ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection for personnel. This section also goes on to dictate that “if used in a wet/damp location, follow the guidelines from Article 406(A) & (B) (which dictates that they be weather resistant listed, and incorporate hinged doors for increased ingress protection).

# NEC Article 590.6(B)

This section gives fairly the same information, except it is the rules & regulations for “other” (as in other than the mentioned locations from 590.6(A)) receptacle outlets.

All and all, NEC 590 dictates the standards for electrical protection of temporary power supply operations, which also tie in similarly with OSHA standards in this instance. # What is NEC 555?

NEC Article 555 and all of its subsets have to do with Marinas, Boatyards, Floating Buildings, and Commercial & Noncommercial Docking Facilities. In more depth, this Article has to do with “the installation of wiring and equipment in the areas comprising fixed or floating piers, wharves, docks, floating buildings, and other areas in marinas, boatyards, boat basins, boathouses, yacht clubs, boat condominiums, docking facilities,” and so on relating to electrical protection in/around a boating area. There are two different subsets in NEC Article 555 that have relation to GFCI and ELCI/GFPE (Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter/Ground Fault Protection Equipment) protection, and they are as follows:

# NEC 555.35

This subsection is for aquatic vessels and the shore power that supplies them (not including floating buildings). It stipulates the Ground-Fault Protection of Equipment (aka a GFPE/ELCI) and Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) electrical protection products for marine areas in accordance with its 4 different sections, which are:

A.) The first part of this section involves the Feeder circuits of shore power equipment. A GFPE, rated up to (but not exceeding) 100 mA, shall be provided for feeders installed on docking facilities.
B.) the second part of the section deals with the branch circuits and their circuit protection in the defined areas of this Article, which are:

1.) The first part is regarding receptacles providing shore power. These receptacles must be GFPE, and cannot be rated above 30 mA, and are required to be provided for receptacles installed in accordance with 555.33(A) (12in. above the deck surface of the pier).

2.) The second is for “outlets for other than shore power.” This means outlets supplied by branch circuits up to 150 volts to ground and 60 Amps, single phase, & up to 150 volts to ground, up to 100 Amps, three phase, shall be provided with GFCI protection for personnel.

C.) The third part of this subset section is regarding boat hoists. It states that GFCI protection for personnel shall be provided for outlets up to 240 volts that supply a boat hoist installed at docking facilities. GFCI protected receptacles not involved with shore power may also be permitted to supply boat hoists.
D.) The fourth part of this section is pertaining to leakage current measurement devices. If there are four or more receptacles supplying shore power to boats, a Listed leakage current measurement device for use in marina applications needs to be available and used to determine leakage current from each boat that will plug into the specified shore power. It also states that the listing requirement for the leakage current measurement device for use in marina applications will become effective on January 1, 2026.

# NEC 555.53

This other subset pertains solely to Ground-Fault Protection for floating buildings (as part of “Part III” of this Article titled “Floating Buildings”). It states that the main overcurrent protective device that feeds into a floating building needs to have ground-fault protection below 100mA. It also states that Ground-fault (GFCI) protection of each individual branch or feeder circuit can be a sufficient alternative.
This article has a lot of different rules and guidelines from most of the other NEC Articles due to the nature of the areas it is describing (outdoor aquatic areas) and for good measure. # What is NEC 625?

NEC Article 625 and all of its subsets deal with Electric Vehicle Power Transfer Systems, or in simpler terms, anything that involves the charging of an electric vehicle (EV). Everything in this Article relates to the safe practice of charging EVs with Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE, also known as an EV charging station or EV charger). It is also very expansive, detailing the mandated procedures for a given EVSE, such as manufacturing specifications (x. cable length), installation methods, rules for different product variations (portable, permanent, wireless charging, etc.), and more. While every part of this Article has merit, we will look at a few subsets that have the most purpose for your safety, which include:

# NEC Article 625.6

This subsection is very straightforward, stating that your charging system needs to be (UL) Listed. This, in more detail, means that the charging system has passed the rigorous safety testing requirements made and carried out by Underwriters Laboratory.

# NEC Article 625.42

This subsection deals with the rating (as in electrical amperage rating) of the charging system. It states that the charging system needs to have an acceptable supply of electricity to meet the demands of the charging system. What that means is the breaker supplying the electricity to the charging system needs to be rated above the charging system’s capacity (if you have a 32-amp charging station then you need it to be supplied by a 40-amp breaker). There are 2 ways to get around this however, which include:

A. If there is an energy management system (EMS) involved that can supply load management to the EVSE. The EMS can be for either 1 or multiple charging stations, but it needs to be set to have the maximum load allowed be in accordance with the feeder (breaker) of the equipment. Most EMS systems are usually for designed commercial & industrial EV charging applications that involve numerous vehicles.

B. The other way to get past is by having a charging system with an adjustable amperage setting. This will allow a user to set the charging station to an amperage setting lower than the breaker's allowance of electricity, therefore operating at an acceptable current level.
NEC Article 625.54: This part of the Code simply states that there needs to be Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection involved in every charging system. This is also (partially) explained in more detail in two other subsections. In 625.22 it states that a Listed “personnel protection system” is needed, which implies GFCI protection but can include more in the system. Also, in 625.60(D) it states that the charging system needs to have a visible indication and reset options on the product (which implies GFCI test & reset capabilities).

# What does this Code mean?

This NEC section specifies the safety measures needed in the charging equipment for an electric vehicle in extensive detail. To meet all of these stringent requirements the NEC states that any EVSE used should be UL Listed so that it meets the guided standards of protecting the user charging the vehicle from harm in any environment. Also note, UL has different testing thresholds for EV chargers for indoor and outdoor use, so make sure to check what your EVSE is Listed for specifically to make sure you don’t use unsafe charging equipment in the harsh outdoor elements.

# NEC Article 410.184:

NEC Article 410.184 is the Ground Fault Circuit Interruption section of NEC article 410, which relates to horticulture lighting. Just as many subsets of NEC guidelines, it is very to the point, stating that “for any horticultural use employing flexible cords with one or more conductors shall be supplied by lighting outlets protected by a (UL) Listed ground-fault circuit interrupter”. This means that in larger growing operations, the lighting fixtures must be protected by a UL recognized GFCI. Also, with the 2023 update language, it includes Listed special purpose ground-fault circuit-interrupter (SPGFCI) protection for circuits exceeding 150V, as this is common for the size of lighting installations in this industry.

# What does this Code mean?

Just like it is stated above, lighting structures in horticulture growing settings need UL Listed ground fault protection. Now however, the NEC has added more to accommodate the large lighting structures involved in this specific industry, so circuits with over 150V can now have SPGFCI protection, which is a higher trip threshold (Class C 20mA) than normal Class A GFCI protection (6mA).

1.) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- & 20-Amp non-locking type receptacles used for disassembly and reassembly or readily accessible to the general public.
2.) Equipment that is readily accessible to the general public and supplied from a 125-volt, single-phase, 15- or 20-Amp branch circuit.

B.) GFCI protection is not required in any receptacle that is not accessible from grade level and only facilitated quick disconnecting/reconnecting of electrical equipment. These receptacles are also required to be of the locking type.

C.) GFCI protection is not permitted with any form of egress lighting.

D.) GFCI protection being provided using GFCI receptacles, and the branch circuits supplying receptacles use flexible cord, said GFCI must be listed, labeled, and identified for portable use.

National Electrical Code Article 426 spells out the electrical safety guidelines for all permanent outdoor electric deicing and snow melting equipment. This includes both “embedded” (underneath the structure, such as driveways, sidewalks, steps, and more) and “exposed” (on the exterior of the structure, such as roofs, drainage systems, bridges, and more) heating equipment, which can be seen as either heating cable or panels. There are a variety of subsections in Article 426, but one notes the need for ground-fault protection, which is subsection 426.28.

# What is NEC Article 426.28?

NEC Article 426.28 tells what the required ground fault protection for any equipment that is categorized as deicing and/or snow melting equipment. It specifies that any fixed equipment in that category needs ground-fault protection, but states that the trip level should be dictated by the manufacturer of the equipment. While that isn’t a full explanation, we can assume that the trip level will be over the standard Class A (5 +/- 1 mA) ground fault trip threshold because if it did the Code would state it required a “Listed Class A GFCI”. We can infer this because snow melting/deicing equipment is prone to stray current leakage (due to its heating elements). A good rule of thumb should be to have protection with a trip level at or below 30 mA, as that is considered the highest stray current leakage a human can endure before becoming seriously injured.

# What does this Code mean?

The main takeaway from this Code section is that, although it doesn’t state an exact trip level, you still need a degree of ground-fault protection to accompany heating equipment meant to deter ice and snow accumulation. It is also best practice, when not offered more information, to include ground fault protection equipment with a trip level at or below 30 mA to deter nuisance tripping while also protecting personnel, pedestrians, and the equipment itself.

There is a lot of important information involved in the text, but we are going to look specifically at the subsection pertaining to ground fault protection, NEC 427.22.

# What is NEC 427.22?

NEC Article 427.22 states that the heating equipment for pipelines & vessels is required to have ground fault protection for the heat tracing or heating panels (either or both) that are involved with the system. It doesn’t state that it requires Class A protection (5 +/-1 mA), so best practice would indicate to use ground fault protection equipment with a trip level at or below 30 mA, to provide protection to personnel while also accounting for stray current leakage that is common with this type of application (due to its heating elements). There are cases, which are rare, where there is no ground fault protection required that have to meet 2 conditions, which are:

1.) The maintenance & supervision of the system can only be done by a qualified person
2.) The continued operation of the circuit is required for the equipment/process to safely operate.

If these 2 conditions are met, it is also required to have an alarm that indicates when a ground fault is present.

# What does this Code mean?

National Electrical Code Article 427 details the safety standards for a very hazardous type of application, so it makes sense that its ground fault protection information is regimented as well. Although this heating equipment isn’t very compatible with Class A protection, it makes sure that the personnel coming into contact with the equipment still have a level protection from hazardous electrical leakage by requiring some form of ground fault protection equipment, such as an ELCI solution from North Shore Safety.

The list in this Article’s general classification names 20 specific types of locations, including: auditoriums, gymnasiums, restaurants, and more (while excluding theaters & television studios, which have their own dedicated sections in the NEC - Article 520 and Article 530). Subsection 518.3 details the ground fault protection measures (as well as temporary wiring) in this article.

# What is NEC 518.3?

According to NEC Article 518.3, all cord/plug connected appliances on a branch circuit must be protected by a Listed Class A (5 mA +/-1) portable ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), provided either as a factory-installed feature or as a field-wired solution.

There is a new note in the 2023 Code adaptation, which expresses that all temporary wiring involved in exhibition booths (in a tradeshow hall) need to follow NEC 590 (meaning, it needs to meet more rugged portable use standards). However, you are excused from the ground fault protection guidelines of 590.6. Instead, the Code suggests that you follow the standards outlined in 518.3 (Listed Class A protection, similar to NEC 210.8(B)).

# What does this Code mean?

NEC Article 518 establishes the electrical safety requirements for large assembly occupancies, helping to protect hundreds, if not thousands or people at a time. This Code states that when portable electrical equipment is involved in a large gathering space it is required to have Class A GFCI protection and be in a rugged enclosure to ensure a safe environment. This is especially crucial since not just working personnel, but pedestrians can come into contact with electrical equipment in these types of environments.

# What is NEC 530.11?

NEC Article 530.11 mandates at any branch circuit, regardless of size, that supplies one or more receptacles must be protected by a GFCI in accordance with NEC 210.8(B), with the exception of 210.8(B)(6), which pertains to outdoor areas. This means that all 125-volt and 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits up to 50 Amps, and all receptacles supplied by three phase branch circuits supplying up to 100 Amps need Class A (5 mA +/- 1 trip level) ground fault protection. The Article also notes that branch circuits for egress lighting, life-critical stunts/special effects, or any other location where an unanticipated shutdown might create increased hazards shall not need GFCI protection.

# What is NEC 530.21?

NEC Article 530.21 outlines portable equipment use in two sections (A and B), listing requirements as well as other outdoor use requirements. They detail as follows:

A.) This section requires that all portable stage and studio electrical equipment be Listed or approved by a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The scope also encompasses field-assembled electrical equipment, which is required to be Listed as well.

B.) This section permits the temporary usage of portable equipment that is not specifically rated for outdoor use, provided that it is operated by an authorized personnel while energized and is securely isolated from public access.

This subsection also references ANSI (American National Standards Institute)/ESTA (Entertainment Services & Technology Association) E.19 - 2015 to follow best practices for use of ground fault protection equipment in the entertainment industry. # What is NEC 530.44?

NEC Article 530.44 lists the additional requirements for GFCI protection in studio & remote locations in 3 alphabetical sections, which are:

A.) Outside the scope of NEC 210.8 (B), Class A personnel protection is required in

All 125-volt, single-phase, 15 and 20 Amp receptacles that are not intended for use by unqualified personnel in motion picture or television productions shall be equipped with GFCI protection.

All portable equipment that is supplied by 125-volt, single phase 15 or 20 Amp branch
circuits accessible to unqualified personnel may incorporate a Class A Listed GFCI within the power supply cord, provided it is within 12in. (300mm) from the attachment plug.

B.) GFCI protection is not permitted for egress lighting, as its unanticipated interruption can cause a dangerous environment.

C.) Receptacles supplied by portable cords need to be GFCI protected, Listed, labeled, and identified for portable use.

# What does this Code mean?

National Electrical Code Article 530 makes sure that everyone, qualified or not, at recording studios & remote locations are safe from electrical harm. It notes, like many other NEC Articles, that these areas need to follow NEC 210.8(B) in a majority of locations, and also that the portable equipment being used is Class A protected and Listed for the hazardous environments they inhabit.

There is one subsection, 545.28, where ground fault protection measures apply in this Article.

# What is NEC 545.28?

NEC Article 545.28 mandates that all manufactured buildings must follow ground fault protection guidelines in accordance with NEC 210.8(B).
