2023-Code-Year-NEC-545

NEC Article 545 outlines the electrical protection of Manufactured Buildings. Learn more about the ground fault protection standards for these structures.

What is NEC 545?

National Electrical Code Article 545 states the enforced electrical safety requirements of Manufactured Buildings and Relocatable Structures (x. Mobile Homes, Trailers, etc.). The Article mandates the best practices for securing cables, feeder power supply, bonding and grounding methods, and more. There is one subsection, 545.28, where ground fault protection measures apply in this Article.

What is NEC 545.28?

NEC Article 545.28 mandates that all manufactured buildings must follow ground fault protection guidelines in accordance with NEC 210.8(B). Meaning, all 125-volt and 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits up to 50 Amps, and all receptacles supplied by three phase branch circuits supplying up to 100 Amps must have Class A (5 mA +/- 1 trip level) ground fault protection. The Article also notes that all receptacles (x. outlets) installed that are accessible from the outside of the structure are required to be GFCI integrated to provide personnel protection.

What does this Code mean?

National Electrical Code Article 545 is very straightforward with its ground fault protection requirements. It mandates that all structures follow NEC 210.8(B). This means providing GFCI protection in all single, split, and 3-phase applications. It also notes that every outlet on the outside of the structure requires GFCI protection to provide safety to the owners, workers, and pedestrians that come in contact with said structure.
